Monastery of Jeronimos

Considered the most important monument in Lisbon for beauty and wideness. Its built started in 1502 and it was over in 1551 when king Joao III stopped the endowments. Many directors followed the works, the most important of them were Diego de Botaica and Joao de Castilho, both great representers of the "Manueline" architecture style. Ths style is characterised by the use of round forms and naturalistic decorations around the windows on the example of oriental art, experimenting decoration link to the sea-theme (very important in portuguese culture) but also following the traditional Gothic art. Clear example of this style is the Monastery church that is one of highest european example, but that is balanced by manueline shapes, by naturality of decorations, which are mixed compleately with the structure of the church. So it's easy to see in the shape of the six strong columns the trunk of Palms that grow up until they branch out in the ribbing of the vault. Another example of the originality of the manueline style and of his capability of balance styles so different is the monastery cloister: here too we find that gothic shapes and rinascimental decorations are balanced by the exuberance of innovations. The structure is carachterized by a ritmical movement just like waves. Because of this aspect, as for the use of many decorations inspired by the see, as for its general richness of elements coming from different culture, the poruguish art reflects the preoccupations and the conquers of its population and of its time.
